In some fortunate timing in fall 2018, rather than demolishing its building at 207 S. Forrest St., McFarland State Bank instead donated the property (valued at $1.5 million) to the city for municipal purposes. That led to City Hall’s move in April 2019 and traction for the Opera House expansion plan. “We had nowhere to expand in terms of concessions or other possible stuff that you would expect to see in a performance arts space,” Brehm said.

The initial impetus was to self-soothe as a family and shield in the comfort of creativity. However, on Love Is The King,Tweedy has balanced the books and penned a beautifully honest ode to love and hope. He has documented a time in history through the personal lens of shared human experience. The presence of the “guitar solo,” which became known as “that guy” during the session, blows the window wide open.

For a half century the hall hosted operas, musicals, minstrel shows, vaudeville and temperance meetings, besides class plays and high school graduations. Although it’s a challenge to categorize, the seven-song album feels whole because of the band’s dedication to honesty as well as harmony. Born and raised in Europe, brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger started singing and playing instruments at a very young age. Growing up in a family where music was an important part of life, they were exposed to a wide diversity of musical influences. The brothers were performing regularly by the time they were eleven and twelve years old, and they began their professional career in 1979. Since their formal introduction to American audiences in 1997, the Kruger Brothers’ remarkable discipline, creativity and their ability to infuse classical music into folk music has resulted in a unique sound that has made them a fixture within the world of acoustic music. In their ever-expanding body of work – Jens Kruger (banjo and vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar and lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass and vocals) – the Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. The Stoughton Opera House is located in the heart of Stoughton, Wisconsin, just a few minutes southeast of Madison.
Led by songwriters Isaac Horn and Lincoln Mick and Bailey Warren on fiddle, The Arcadian Wild confidently inhabits and explores an intersection of genre, blending the traditional with the contemporary. Combining elements of progressive bluegrass, folk, and formal vocal music, The Arcadian Wild offer up songs of invitation; calls to come and see, to find refuge and rest, to journey and wonder, to laugh and cry, to share joy and community and sing along. The players have well-established individual musical careers as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestral players. They perform constantly in Madison and beyond, appearing regularly in such ensembles as the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, the La Crosse Symphony, and the Mosaic Chamber Players. Early in 2020, an article was released declaring that the music industry needed more happy songs. As Martin Earley and Calin Peters recall, they laughed while reading it, knowing that their work as The Ballroom Thieves explores the spirit of that paradigm.

With Lowdown Hoedown, Carter shares the fruits of decades’ worth of on-the-road experience, spectacular musical sensibility, and genuine excitement for what bluegrass can be. Renovations have gone well, other than an iffy on-time delivery of new couches, he said, a supply problem many consumers have experienced during the pandemic. Guests to the lounge, who must have a ticket for a day’s show to enter, will have their pick of other comfortable furnishings, even if that shipment is delayed, he said. Not long into Wilco’s North American tour, Tweedy’s natural instinct to return home was realized when all further dates were abandoned. He escaped the anxiety and dislocation of being out at sea during a worldwide crisis and fell into the familiarity of the studio.
Along the way, Mann forged a powerful new sound driven by her distinctive singing style—stripped-down, folky, acoustic but also forceful and cerebral, exploring psychological themes with dark wit and an eye for the world’s ugliest power plays. As a fiddler, Carter has been featured on albums by Steve Earle, Ricky Skaggs, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels, Vince Gill, Asleep at the Wheel, and many more, all in addition to his tireless touring and recording with Del as well as the Travelin’ McCourys. On Carter’s forthcoming solo album, Lowdown Hoedown, listeners may recognize instrumental contributions from such legends as Jerry Douglas or Sam Bush alongside vocals from young trailblazers like Sarah Jarosz or Billy Strings. New to this season’s schedule is acclaimed musician and musical historian, Rhiannon Giddens, set to perform on Tuesday, Nov. 9.
Lone Piñon is a New Mexican string band, or “orquesta típica”, whose music celebrates the integrity and diversity of their region’s cultural roots. This December’s holiday shows typify what it means to be a live music venue after a global pandemic. Up until 2019, the first floor of the Opera House was home to city offices, including the mayor’s.
A feel-good summertime release with humor on top and deeper meaning just below the surface, it includes 13 new originals about a bear, a fish, lambs, horses, and some people too - a grave digger, a neighbor, and even Walter Cronkite. Backed by his loyal bandmates Mike Bub (bass), Shad Cobb (fiddle), his wife Jan Fabricius (mandolin and vocals) and Cory Walker (banjo) and other ace sidemen, CUP OF SUGAR features a special guest spot from old friend Del McCoury. CUP OF SUGAR co-writers include Ronnie Bowman, Jonathon Byrd, Shawn Camp, Jan Fabricius, and Thomm Jutz. Tran’s compositions have been performed across the US, including by the St. Lawrence String Quartet and the Friction Quartet. The SF Examiner reviewed his String Quartet as having “a tendency to thwart the usual expectations… fascinating”.
The 60 performances a season, with upcoming guests including Alex DeGrassi (March 24), the Del McCoury Band (March 31) and Leon Redbone (May 5), are all put together by one and a half employees. "There is scarcely a jewel in the many theaters we have played in 34 years to compare with the beautiful Stoughton Opera House," says Douglas B. Green, better known as Ranger Doug of the cowboy band Riders in the Sky. "Add to that a great staff, excellent sound, and most of all an always appreciative audience, and it's no wonder at all why we love to return to Stoughton." The restored 1901 opera house draws patrons from as far away as Ann Arbor, Chicago, Peoria and the Twin Cities. And it's not just audiences who enjoy the Victorian venue, its lively acoustics and perfect programming.
